Orange Elevator Pitch

The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce Australia (NCCA) launches the ‘Orange Elevator Pitch’. With this initiative the NCCA aims to provide more background information to members about members.

Every week the NCCA will introduce a member that has a story to share with the NCCA Network. This allows other members to better understand the depth and breadth of the NCCA Network and provides opportunities to network for business.

Who: Bianca Slingerland

What: Management Consultant - Newport Consulting

Tell us something about your background

I grew up in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands. Besides completing my VWO (high school) in my hometown, I was a competitive athlete, playing tennis and doing athletics.

I completed my Master in Business Administration in Groningen. I enjoyed the great atmosphere in Groningen with a focus on facilitating students to combine study with pleasure and lots of opportunities for personal development. During my time as a student I joined several boards and committees. For example I was a full time board member (Treasurer) of the Students Sports Union, the ACLO.

After completing my Masters I worked as an account manager for the adidas Group, where I was responsible for account management and business improvement in a department that had been recently downsized.

About a year later I met my now Australian husband, Adam, in Italy. We ended up living together in Italy where I started my own management consultancy practice. I helped small business owners increasing sales and profits. Just over 3 years ago we moved to Perth, WA and I started working as a management consultant for Newport Consulting. In my current role I focus on operational excellence and work with a variety of clients. I was involved in a multi-million dollar benefit realisation project for WA utilities company, the Water Corporation for almost 2 years. I gained tremendous experience from this project as it introduced me to some of the Australian working culture characteristics.

Adam and I are now living in Melbourne and enjoying the more European lifestyle again.

What makes a management consultant successful?

Engaging the client in the core messages of the change management journey. Ultimately “The client is always right”! So if the client is delivering your messages a win-win situation is created and success will be guaranteed.

What should we be asking you about at the next NCCA function?

When are you available for an Australian cup of coffee with a Dutch biscuit?

I like the Australian way of getting to know people over a cup of coffee. It seems to me that everyone here is accessible and makes an effort to invest time in networking. It’s probably a necessary strategy to survive in a system that was described to me by several Australians as “It is not about what you know, but who you know”.

A cup of coffee would be complete for me with sharing knowledge, insights and some Dutch sense of humour, or as I see it with “the biscuit”.

As a management consultant and also out of personal interest I enjoy meeting people with all sorts of backgrounds and interests.
